St Mary's Extension Progress
13th February 2008: No work had started, but it was scheduled to begin within 2 or 3 weeks. So this was the starting point. Scroll down to see further photos on this page as work progresses. So keep coming back!

15th March 2008: Hooray! The long awaited work has actually started! About 1 week's worth of work has seen the entrance to the rear car park shifted a few feet to the left and the old entrance porch to the church and vestry demolished.

27th March 2008: The old entrance foundations have been dug out and the new foundation trenches are being put in.

8th April 2008: The new foundations are in and the outline of the wall clearly shows.

13th April 2008: The concrete floor has been poured and bricks and other building materials have arrived on site. Soon the walls will go up.

20th April 2008: The walls are going up, outside and internal walls.

2nd May 2008: The scaffolding has appeared & the walls are higher. Some ground floor window frames are in place.

17th May 2008: The ground floor is built and now the first floor tower is taking shape.

1st June 2008: The roof structure, including the flat roof can now been seen, and how it has been joined into the main church roof.

16th June 2008: The tower is now ready for its roof, and the roof work over the new entrance is progressing.

28th June 2008: The tower now has its pointy bit on top - or at least the skeleton of the tower roof, and the roof over the entrance is nearly ready for tiling.

8th July 2008: Roof tiles are going on. Once the extension is watertight then internal work can take place.

21st July 2008: Progress seems slow from the outside, but probably a lot going on inside. Really looking forward to the scaffolding coming down!

2nd August 2008: ...and it has. The scaffolding has come down and the cross has been fixed to the top!

14th August 2008:

Instead of one, here are several photos including the inside for the first time.

The contractor's cabin has been removed to allow some ground works in front of the entrance. This enables a better view of the front that we haven't seen before. As a consequence the site office is now relocated in the upstairs room.

The screeding on the floors is the next main task, but the walls and ceilings are already plastered, the electrics and plumbing mostly in, the heating boiler installed.

A wooden pillar is needed outside by the front door to support the porch roof instead of the steel pole as soon as the ground works are done.

Stone cappings are required for the external brick pillars, the flat roof and some guttering needs to be completed, and some panels on the front doors still need glazing. The staircase and under stairs cupboard will be installed after the floor screed is done.

The doors between the extension and church are still to be decided and the inside will then need decorating and furnishing.

.. but it's not far away from being finished now!

(5) The entrance area with stair well (still without the staircase) and toilet to the left.
1st September 2008: The front entrance and outside paving is being finished off.

6th September 2008: St Mary's Fete day - the extension is decorated with rain soaked bunting! The front entrance and outside paving is now finished off and the porch roof is now supported by a new wooden pillar rather than the steel pole. The internal doorway between the church and extension is still boarded up. I couldn't see the internal progress, but the webmaster will try to find out!

1st October 2008: Nearly done! The metal fencing has been removed. Stone cappings for brick pillars still required, some external groundworks to be finished and the internal doorway between extension and church.

1st December 2008: All done! The extension was opened officially on 22nd November (see Recent Events page) and the project is successfully concluded. This is the last photo of this series - so what next?
